My Teacher Example for 5th Grade Students’ ReferenceDSC_5834

Student Project:  Radial Design Dot Paintings

Preliminary design ideas were developed first by 5th graders students. They used a ruler to create straight line designs within the circle and then chose 4 – 7 colors to bring their designs to life. 4 student examples of initial design ideas:

Then, the 5th graders created their vivid, visually striking, final radial designs. Completed works are below, along with a few works-in-progress, to reveal the process for the viewer.

The Water's Reflection, 2008 (Digital Photograph)The Water's Reflection-edit, 2008 (Digital Photograph)

Taken of the Water’s Reflection at Silver Lake, in 2008 (and named by the same name) these two abstract images simualtaneously complement and contrast with eachother, creating a striking and harmonious visual duo. The repetition of lines, shapes, and visual textures within the photos create rhythm and movement, and the contrasts of colors within the photos create an assymetrical balance. Paired together or alone, each photographs’ composition could easily stand on its own aesthetically.

Geometric Brooch-2, 2012 (Needle Felting)

Geometric Brooch-2 has vivid colors, balanced with the repetitive use of simple geometric circles.  This brooch was made for a good friend and reminds me of Orphist artwork.

Orphism was an art movement that could be described as an offshoot of the geometric Cubist art movement.  In addition to using geometric shapes, Orphists dynamically utilized the element of art – color – and its expressive qualities to create visual unison in their works of art (“Orphism”).  Sonia Terk-Delaunay’s striking artwork, in this style, are some of my favorite examples of the aesthetic beauty within the Orphism art movement.

Concrete Primary, 2012
This image was a result of looking down to the ground at the right time to see this striking example of synthetic beauty:  iridescent colors, primary colors, asymmetry, the interplay of straight and curved lines, and of course, a result of having my good camera in the car to snap a clear shot.
