Project:  Self – Portrait Drawings

Inspired by* the large-scale portrait work of artist Chuck Close and his working methods, such as his use of a grid, Art Foundations I and Senior Art students created their own self-portraits drawings using a photograph.  They gridded off their paper in correlation with the dimensions of their photograph and proceeded to first do an outline drawing of their features.  Then, students chose repetitive line designs from the several value scales they created in order to render value and shape as realistically as possible from their photographs.  The overall effect created as a result of this process is that of a unique, patterned mosaic containing their images within.

*I discovered this project on the incredibleart.org Website, submitted by art teacher Larry Prescott.  Prescott’s inspiration for the project came from Paul Zabos’ article: “Close to Mosaics, Drawings by Paul Zabos” from the September, 2002 Arts and Activities magazine.
